Nothing Says "Happy New Year" like....

...Russian Lesbians. We were warned the resort we were staying in attracted a lot of Russians, but what we didn't realize until minutes before the New Year count down, was the resort seems to be a hot spot for Russian rug munchers. It took us a little while, but eventually we realized all of the large, hearty women in early 90s dresses and flowy denim were not there for a Russian bachelorette party... But if you cant beat them, we figured join them. We all ended the night dancing to bad russian pop hits played by the hotel cover band "The Essence" Who knew the Filipino cover band knew so many Abba songs?

Our only complaint for the night was the intense scene created by free buffet food and a crowd of Communists. The hotel staff spent all day laying out elaborate displays of carved fruit, dessert platters, and grilled seafood...all to be destroyed in 15 minutes by hungry Russians and the small group of unsuspecting Americans who got caught up in the panic. By 845 they had already cut into the "happy New Year' sheet cake. By 1130 all that was left were some ritz crackers and stale strawberry oreos.

We went out to dinner last night at a seafood BBQ place on the water-- we had fantastic shellfish & beers outside next to the ocean. It will be hard to leave the beach, but yvonne and I head to the mekong delta for 2 nights starting tonight. We shall see how we do as we are pushed from the nest by our mama bird Minh...i suspect we'll fumble our way through the rest of vietnam, cambodia & Thailand eating at the TGIFridays of those countries and buying overpriced handicrafts. I guess that's what vacation is all about.

Happy New Year!

  1. I was extremely worried when I read "If you can't beat them join them"....I have found myself in way too many situations I have regretted after nights of downing cheap Russian vodka.

  2. My thoughts ran along the same line as Brad's. (not the cheap vodka part)
